Ikat Silk Sarong in Ruby Red

Out of Stock

Product Description

These sarong pieces are mostly made by weavers in collaboration with a charity for the disabled, in Takeo province outside Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Each piece takes about a minimum of 4 weeks to make depending on the number of hours that the weaver works each day.

Each sarong has a traditional Cambodian, geometric ikat design which has been passed down through the generations and woven intricately by mothers and their daughters. The designs are prepared by the village design expert and then dyed onto the silk threads before the selendang is woven. Women folk in the villages weave while taking care of their children. Most looms are placed below the traditional village homes which are usually raised on stilts. Buying from them helps to provide some supplementary income for their families.
